Echo (A Retelling of Metamorphoses)

Hey Friendly Followers!  I’m super busy this week but in an effort to keep posting I’m version of fragments of Ovid’s story Metamorphoses. I wrote this for an English assignment last year so it’s a little bit longer then most of my posts. Hope you like it!!

“Get down from there!” Jenny yelled to Nathan, the 7-year old boy she baby sat. This was the 5th time that day Nathan had climbed in a tree that was far too high and dangerous for a kid his size. She’d felt like a broken record all day having to tell him to stop, to be good and not to do this and that. Grabbing him from the tree she placed him on the ground and took his hand, “ I guess it’s time to go home if you won’t listen.” Instead of begging to stay at the park or apologizing and promising to stop, he did what most annoyed 7-year old boys would, he began the copying game and repeated what she said back to her. “Nathan not this again.” she said exasperatedly, “Nathan not this again” he replied sticking his tongue out.

“Nathan stop” She said pulling him down the path.

“Nathan stop”

“I mean it, stop”

“I mean it, st–” Nathan was cut off by an elderly man, “Ah, I see you have an Echo.”

Stopping Jenny replied, “ Yes, sir, It seems I do.”

Intimidated this time Nathan said nothing. “ What’s your name Echo?” The man said to Nathan. Hiding behind Jenny’s leg he told the man his name. “Well Nathan, it’s not nice to echo people, it’s quite rude.” The old man trailed off into a story about a nymph named Echo who could only repeat what had been said the moment before and a boy named Narcissus. Jenny didn’t pay much attention, thinking of how to politely leave the conversation with the odd, old man. When the story ended with the boy falling in love with himself and dying since he could not bare to be apart from himself, Jenny whisked Nathan away claiming his mother needed him home soon.

When Jenny picked up Nathan the next day to drive him to the park all he could talk about was the funny, old man and his story. When they got to the park Nathan ran for the bench the old man had been sitting on the day before. Excitedly he looked for the man, but he was not there. “Go play on the playground, he might come later.” Jenny said in attempt to cheer him up.  Nathan disappointingly went over to the other kids and began digging in the sand box. A little while later the old man appeared and took his place at the bench. As soon as Nathan saw this he ran over followed by Jenny. No longer the shy boy hiding behind her leg he was yesterday, “ Tell me another story! Like yesterday!” He said sitting down in front of the man. “ What kind of story would you like to hear, boy?” The man said. “A weird one, like yesterday!”

And so the old man began, “Up, down, no one knew the difference. Heat fought with cold, sun beating down on ice trying to melt it. A war among a world unmade. Land left with life, death and no real meaning, with opposites always at odds and everything swirling together to create friction and chaos. It was decided to be divided by the Creator’s four sons. Each son given a quarter of this land to do with as he wished. So the sons made clear the chaos, but all was still not well. The first son, Eurus owned the land of the dawns, the realms of the Arahy, he owned the morning. The second son, Zephyrus held the power to the west and it’s low glow of the sun’s setting. The third son, Borea held the cold winds of the north, the winds as frozen as his heart. The fourth son, Auguster ruled the south lands, wet and warm. With the land livable and ruled, civilization is free to grow and move. Thus the four ages began.”

“What are the four ages?” Nathan wondered excitedly. “That story is for tomorrow.” The old man said dismissively. So Jenny took Nathan home and brought him back again the next day. As soon as the old man got to the park that third day he began his story, “The god’s fought amongst themselves after the world was set. Looking down on the world seeing men fighting men, loved ones killing each other, killings being committed with no hesitation, no thought to the waste of a life.” “This sounds a little morbid  for Nathan, he’s only 7 you know.” Jenny interrupted, “yes, yes it’s fine. Now don’t interrupt me again miss or I won’t tell my story.” The only man replied before continuing. ”Things were not like this before the Iron Age. Things were bad but never that bad, never with men slitting the throats of men. The blood loss of the men filling Mother nature with children and creating monstrous men. It’s a wonder how things evolved this way. The Golden Age, the first of the four ages, was a time of peace for all. No one held anger, or malicious thoughts, there was food aplenty for everyone. The earth produced the needs of civilizations and they took willingly but not greedily, the weather always promoting growth like spring all year.  But with the addition of seasons in the Silver Age things began to change. Houses were to be built, fires to be burned and the earth no longer produced food all year, the people had to plant and work for their food, people began the use of animals to help with manual labor. But still the world was a good place with good people…”

The old man finished his story slowly dragging it out over the course of many days. Jenny would sit off in a world of daydreams while the old man rattled on about the world’s creation and god doing bad things with mortals and fighting always. Nathan was fascinated by these tales. He would sit and listen as long as the man would talk. One day, Nathan requested a story with action, and so the man’s tale began “Phaethon, son of Clymene and the Sun was a good boy. A boy who lived his life with only a mother present and a ominous father lurking overhead but never close enough to reach. He seeked a father, a way to close the gap he felt between himself and his history, not to discredit his mother, but without a father there would always be a part of him missing. While he had been told of his father, the Sun, how could he be sure of his heritage when he had never laid eyes on his own father. As he grew older he began to distrust his heritage, how could he be the son of the Sun? Could he really trust his Mother with nothing but her word to go by? He made no motion to further investigate his worries. After all there was nothing more for her to give him. That is until Epaphus, called him out on his boasting of being son to a god, asking what proof he had and claiming his mother’s word would not suffice. Embarrassed and ashamed Phaethon returned home with a fiery determination to gain proof. Approaching his mother he told her of what had happened earlier, “ How was I to reply? My mother said so, so it must be? I need more, I will not be made a fool for this again dear mother.” Angrily she replied, “No son of mine is a fool. What’s wrong with my word son? Have I lied to you before?” Shaken he thought and try as he might, he could not come up with a lie she had told him, but still he was not satisfied with this, “Mother while I don’t wish to offend you, I must have more solidarity then you can give me for my belief to be fulfilled.” Nodding solemnly Clymene realized the seriousness of this for her son. She sent him with directions to follow the sun to his father’s home in the heavens.

Walking up the steps to his father’s house for the first time, Phaethon was jittery and nervous. It’s nerve  wracking meeting your father for the first time when your father is also the Sun. Taking a moment to ready himself he opened the doors and walked in. Immediately his father’s eyes lit with recognition, “Phaethon, my son through and through, the blood of my veins, the son of the Sun, the chip of my power, what brings you through this journey to see me. “ Finding his confidence he replied, “ Oh father, if you are who you say you are, prove it to me and to anyone who may question it. Give me something so that I and the world may know that I am your son as you are my father. Prove my mother an honest women and give me the proof I request.” Readily his father agreed, “Anything my son. Your mother is no liar she has told you nothing but the truth. You deserve the honor bestowed upon my name. Whatever you wish my son, anything at all. You ask for it and I shall give it to you. I swear by Styx anything you ask for I will give it to you.” Phaethon took this in greedily, mulling over the possible things he could ask for before deciding. In the end there was no real question of what his request would be, “Anything you say I can ask for? Then I wish for the chariot.” The Sun god immediately regretted his oath, this was the one thing he wished to withhold from his son, he feared his son would not be easily persuaded to request something different but still attempted to change his mind, “ The honor you think you will receive from this action is not what it seems. To control the chariot is not a simple task. Many gods including Jove could not will the chariot to move his way. This is suicide you foolish child. You act as if you are better than the gods, yet you can not understand that this is a death wish.” Phaethon considered his father’s words and still would not change his request. Unable to back out on his oath the Sun God explained to his own son what was to be done, “The track you must follow is clear, go to the west. The horses need no urging, the whip you hold should be used lightly and only if needed. You must hold the reins steady and steer the horses, if you give them an inch they’ll take a mile. You must stay equal distances from the earth and the sky, to close to one will cause it to burn and the other to freeze, you must stay in the middle, the left holds a great Serpent and the right holds other countless dangers. This task will take your full concentration and all your strength and even with that it will still be an impossible task.”

So when the time came Phaethon got on the horses and took off towards the west. But once they left the ground the horses pull became too much of him to handle. Fire flared out of their nostrils, illuminating the sky, the flames of their fur licked Phaethon’s body, burning him which caused him to release the reins. With no one to stop them the horses whirled through the area melting the ice caps and burning the towns of earth. Around and around the horses went leaving fire and death in their wake. Simultaneously, the heat from the horses started burning away Phaethon’s flesh—”

“Oh, shoot look at the time, I’m sorry for interrupting but we have to leave.” Jenny said not liking where the story was headed. “ Awe Jenny, can’t we stay a little longer? I want to know what happens. It’s almost over.” Nathan reasoned. “We can come back tomorrow I’m sure the story can wait till then,” She said already grabbing Nathan’s hand and walking away.

Excited the next day to hear the rest of the story, Nathan ran to the bench to greet the old man who had not yet arrived. Determined, Nathan waited. And waited. And waited, till it was far too late for him and Jenny to still be at the park. “I’m sure something just came up. He’ll be back tomorrow” Jenny said when she finally declared they could wait no longer. But when they returned the next day the old man did not show once again. He didn’t come the day after that, or the day after that, or any of the days after that. Jenny feared this would hurt Nathan or he would take it personally but he didn’t. Instead he would just sit on the bench everyday waiting, waiting for what she didn’t know, he knew the old man would not return. She could not figure what he could possibly be waiting for until one day a little boy walked by hand in hand with a worn out looking woman, every word the woman said the boy would repeat back to her.

In response Nathan said, “Ah, I see you have an Echo.”

@TwitterGirl by Nic Tatano – Review and Summery by yours truly

Cassidy Shea is more commonly known as @TwitterGirl. Twitter Girl is a sassy, sarcastic, clever and often rude Twitter. After losing her job as a reporter and her boyfriend due to a controversial tweet, she’s offered a position on Will Becker’s presidential campaign. All she has to do is tweet bad, catchy things against the other candidates. That’s easy for our twitter girl, sarcasticness and sass come to her as naturally as breathing. It doesn’t hurt that Will is easy on the eyes and quite single at the moment. But what happens when you add in some friendly competition from her best friend for his eyes? Sprinkle in Cassidy’s disabled brother who’s totally in love with the best friend? And maybe add a pinch of an adorable coworker? You end up with an amazing novel by Nic Tatano. This is politics and with politics comes secrets, drama and scandal. Will twitter girl be able to handle all of Will Becker’s secrets? Well, you’ll just have to #findout 😉

twitter girl

Tweet Tweet this book was sweet. I read TwitterGirl back in May of this year. Nic is truly an amazing author. While I haven’t  read anything else (nor will I probably read anything else) by Nic Tatano, I really enjoyed this book. It’s hard not to fall in love with some of our male characters here and I think every girl wishes to have even just a spark of Cassidy’s sass. This book has it’s laugh-out-loud funny part yet still has a captivating plot. Filled with unexpected as well as easily predicted twists this was a fairly fast read. However while I mostly read what would be considered young adult (YA) novels, this is not. I would recommend TwitterGirl for ages 16-55. This is defiantly a chick-lit (like a chick-flick but for books -literature- not movies). TwitterGirl definitely has it’s romance going, and a fair share of” awes” and “ohhs”. Some slightly mature subjects were discussed but nothing you wouldn’t find in a PG-13 Movie. Rating wise I would give this an 8 out of 10. While I loved TwitterGirl it’s not really a book to write home about. Definitely a good read but not a life changing oh my God wow type of a book.

Sorry about how little I have been posting guys. IT’S BEEN LIKE 8 MONTHS!!! I got side tracked with the end of school year buzz then I had a crazy busy/awesome summer. Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally – Review by yours truly

Starting senior year Jordan is a starting quarterback and team captain. She is also girl.  You’d think father, who’s a football star, would be happy right? But it’s quite the opposite. He wants her to stop playing and refuses to come to her games. But Jordan doesn’t care.  Its Jordan’s life, literally.  She lives and breaths, thinks and sleeps football. To be captain and one of the best quarterbacks in her league it has to be that way. Acting like one of the guys is easy for her, it is her.  Her best friends are all guys, well all her friends are guys. Girls just don’t get her and she doesn’t get them. The guys take her seriously, they have to if they want to go to the championships and if she wants to get onto the best college team they need to make it to the championships. That’s why she has a strict no dating guys on the team rule, and anyways the guys on her team are like (over protective) brothers to her. She’s known them all since forever. Senior year is looking bright. Well that’s until this new guy shows up with some kick-ass abs and a great throw, almost better than hers. Almost. He changes everything. Is he trying to steal her spot? No he can’t be and anyways coach wouldn’t let happen, would he? And this new guy, Ty, is actually nice guy. Why can’t Jordan stop thinking about him? He is totally messing with her head, which is bad, but the thoughts are good. She thought she was immune to the power of all guys, up until now. No one before Ty could mess with her when she was in the zone, not even her best friend Henry could. They are like practically the same person, Jordan and Henry, inseparable since a young age. But now on top of everything, Henry’s acting weird. How much can one girl take? Find out in Catching Jordan (The first book in the Hundred Oaks series) By Miranda Kenneally.

Catching jordanCatching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally is a cute, flirty, sporty romance novel. Miranda has created a story filled with all my favorite things; sports, humor, friendship and obviously romance! This novel is filled with unexpected twists and turns, laughs and tears. I love this book for a couple of reasons. One, being the author is amazing and two, being I haven’t read another book like it. What book has the main character being a female football player who doesn’t like dresses or girl talk, a girl that guys actually respect?  I think in some ways it’s really a powerful book. It goes against a lot of stereotypes and to me that is a beautiful thing. I would give this book a 9 out of 10. The only reason it’s not a 10 out of 10 is a spoiler, so I wont say it. You’ll have to read it and contact me separately to learn why! I would say it’s for ages 12 to anyone who likes YAs.

For this review and all future YA novel reviews, I will only put the youngest I think you can be to read it. YA books are not really an ages thing, they are more of a preference thing. I know friends mother’s who only read YAs. Sorry this review took longer then expected to get posted!

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Cath and Wren were inseparable, united by being twins and equal obsessiveness with Simon Snow. That was until they went to college and Wren, being more out going and growing out of Simon Snow, didn’t want to be roommates.  Cath doesn’t want friends. She is perfectly happy going through the rest of her college life doing nothing other than writing fanfiction. Online socialization is all she needs. Her roommate, Reagan, and her roommate’s boyfriend, won’t let her be. She soon becomes friends with this odd roommate of hers and learns that her roommate’s cute “boyfriend”, Levi, isn’t her boyfriend anymore. That changes things, but so does Nick. The boy from her advanced fiction writing class. Cath gets into some sticky situations, “Cath didn’t wake up when the door swung open. But she jumped when it slammed closed. That’s when she felt Levi sprawled out beneath her, the warm scrape of his chin against her forehead. Then she woke up.” how can she get herself out of that one? Does Cath even have time for this with the 8th and final Simon Snow book coming out so soon and Carry On, her fanfiction gone famous, not finished. Her fans are waiting, but so is the rest of her life.

Rainbow Rowell does an amazing job telling this fanfiction-y story with grace and unbelievably believable, character development. Cath’s character development is page turning. She gives all us fangirls hope for finding love, even if it may come unexpectedly. I loved this book. It was extremely relatable, funny and sweet. It was a fast easy read for me, I read it in like two days. I would give it a 9 out of 10. My only two complaints are: one that there was no epilog and two, that the Simon Snow series is not real.

Again sorry for the lack of posting I will try to increase my posts!

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

Rainbow Rowell tells this unexpected love story from both Eleanor and Parks’ point of view. Eleanor is just getting back after her step father, Richie kicked her out a year ago. Now she is going to a new school where she is definitely an outcast. With big red hair, a big personality and just being over all big, this don’t look bright for her. Even the Asian boy, Park, who let her sit next to him on the bus, isn’t showing any signs of friendship. Park has been living in this town since birth. His mom is Korean and his dad is American. He’s not popular to begin with but adding this big redhead sitting next to him on the bus twice a day is not going to help his image. But soon the two begin to bond over comics and become an odd type of friends. Not expecting to fall for each other, but that changes fast. Now how will their relationship last, when things aren’t as Park expected at Eleanor’s house and he is not allowed over, and she feels uncomfortable at his house, and on top of all that someone keeps writing sick notes on Eleanor’s notebook. Will this first love turn into a lasting one? Find out in Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell.

Eleanor and park

I loved Eleanor and Park! I read it in less than 24 hours. I fell in love with their love and Rainbow Rowell as a writer. There were a lot of unexpected twists and meaningful components. This not your average love story and has its funny parts that had me laughing out loud! It has a more real feeling to it that makes all us single pringles jelly. Rainbow Rowell is a truly amazing writer and I would recommend definitely Eleanor and Park! I would probably give it a 9/10. The only reason it’s not a 10/10 is because there was no EPILOGUE!!  A note to all authors I ALWAYS NEED A EPILOGUE! DON’T LEAVE ME HANGING!!

Have you read Eleanor and Park? If so, what did you think? Any book review suggestions? Let me know in the comments! I love seeing your feedback!

p.s. I am sooooo sorry I have not posted in soo long. School, reading and friends have left me without a minute to spare. I do have another book review written and a few in the works though, so those should be posted soon.  Thank you to everyone who stuck with me through multiple posts a week and no posts in months!

Chains by Lauren Halse Anderson book review

Ok, I lied. So I said my next book review would be for The Book Thief. But I had to write a blog post about Chains for my school blog (http://7thgraders.edublogs.org/). So I combined the two. The Book Thief review will come shortly, be patient!

Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, is about a girl named Isabel who is a slave during the revolutionary war. Her master died and set her and her sister Ruth free. Though the lawyer that has her old master’s will is missing. Her word means nothing, so she and Ruth are sold to a tory ( loyalist) family. Isabel knows what she deserves, she saw the will and read it to. How will she get her self and Ruth to safety? Will she get them to safety? What about the new boy she met at the docks? What will happen to him and his patriot master? Find out the answer to all these questions and more, in Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Chains

I have mixed feelings about Chains by Lauren Halse Anderson. I didn’t love the story but I also didn’t hate it. I didn’t love her writing style but I again didn’t hate it.  It wasn’t my favorite but at some points I couldn’t put it down. I think for me it was a little bit predictable. Which kind of ruins a book. If you like  historical fictions I would definitely suggest it as a great book for you to read. Though if you’re like me and on the edge about historical fictions, I don’t suggest it. I enjoyed it but wouldn’t read it again. It was told from Isabel’s point of view which was interesting, but she wrote in half old English which was annoying. But if you like that kind of stuff I would definitely read it. On my scale of 1-10 (1 being bad and 10 being fantabulous) I would give it a 4.5.  It’s not on my hate list but not on my faves list! So basically, I have mixed feels about Chains by Lauren Halse Anderson.

Quote

Experience is…

Experience is not what happens to you; it’s what you do with what happens to you. – Aldous Huxley

I believe this quote to be true. I can’t explain it I just know it is. Trust me I tried writing examples to explain it more clearly but it didn’t work. So this is one you have to figure out on your own. Do you have any thoughts on this quote? Comment them below:)

P.S. It’s a month until my birthday!

Quote

I never have to live without you…

If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you. – A. A. Milne

The main reason I love this quote is because when I was little (like 5 years old) I always thought about love in that way. I mean I always said, I hope my mom, my dad, my brother and I would die at the same time so none of us would need to live with out  the others. I felt that way because I loved them so much I could not dream of a world with out them. I have known them my whole life and don’t know life with out them. So I guess it’s more a fear my 5 year old self had. Now a little bit older I understand that fear of loss more then I did when I was younger. So I guess what I’m saying is I understand this quote. Do you get it?

Winter

Winter contains many joys for me. I enjoy skiing, ice skating and many other things winter brings.  The cold I can’t say I love or even like. But snow makes winter a great season for me. Snowball fights, sledding, skiing and just trying to walk in the big piles of snow are always fun for me. As much as I love snow I would love it so much more if it were warm.  I wish it were more like this-

Winter brings many good and many bad things. Good things include all the fun stuff like going outside and playing in the snow and all the fun activities you can do when it’s cold. And a cold winter day makes hot chocolate taste SO much better. But the bad things are like IT’S TOO DARN COLD and I have to get up at 7 am to go to school. In the warmer months getting up is just annoying but getting up and out of your nice warm bed and pajamas, to walk around in the cold to get ready for a long day at school… How-bout NO. The lucky thing for me is I have a week long break coming up starting today the 14th and ending the 24th. And I will be on a curse with a couple new books and my Grandparents! So that means no cold early mornings for me, I think winter just got better!

What do you like/dislike about winter? What are you doing for your break? Comment below!
